Maya Nikolova begins her sixth year as an assistant coach with the Mean Green swimming and diving team.

In 2008-09, Nikolova helped a squad made up of 15 newcomers break 14 school records and tally its best-ever conference finish. The team finished the season ranked  No. 14 in the CSCAA/CollegeSwimming.com mid-major poll.

During her fourth season, Nikolova helped the Mean Green set every swimming record in the school record books and tally its first two NCAA consideration cuts in the program’s 10-year history. North Texas finished the 2007-08 season ranked No. 15 in the mid-major poll after finishing No. 24 the year before.

In 2006-07, Nikolova helped lead the Mean Green to its best season in the program’s history. North Texas finished with a dual-meet season record of 7-5 and a fourth-place finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championship. For the third straight year, the squad posted the highest grade point average among all North Texas sports for 2006-07 academic year. Prior to her arrival at North Texas, Nikolova served as an assistant coach with the Fairmont Aquatics swim team. She served as counselor at the Fairmont State Swim Camp and the University of Michigan Wolverine Swim Camp. She has also coached at numerous swimming clinics in the United States and in Bulgaria. Along with her swimming and coaching career, Nikolova is the co-author of the first Bulgarian swimming web site.

In 2004, Nikolova earned her bachelor of science degree at Fairmont State University in marketing and business management. She graduated in 2008 from North Texas with an MBA in Human Resource and Organizational Behavior.
During her collegiate swimming career Nikolova received three team Academic All- American awards and the 2004 Scholar of the Year award. She was a top qualifier at the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet all four years and served as team captain her senior year.

A native of Bulgaria, Nikolova went on to be a three-time medalist in the Bulgarian Nationals. She was a regional, state and national champion at the high school level.
