Charlie Leonard brings a varied -- and successful -- background in coaching and athletic administration to the Mean Green as a member of head coach Johnny Jones’ staff.

Leonard previously coached alongside Jones prior to coming to North Texas. When Jones served as interim head coach at Memphis in 1999-2000, Leonard was part of his staff of assistants that helped lead the Tigers that season.

In addition to his game and practice coaching responsibilities with the Mean Green, Leonard handles many of the staff’s administrative duties. He coordinates the team’s travel during the season and leads in the planning and organization of the annual Johnny Jones North Texas Basketball Camps each summer.

Leonard also handles the program’s scouting department, compiling and updating reports on each North Texas opponent throughout the season.

Leonard’s experience in coaching basketball originally dates back to 1975, when he started a career that began at Memphis (Tenn.) Prep School and includes a 12-year tenure at Christian Brothers High School (in Memphis) as well as seven seasons heading the program at Christian Brothers University in Memphis.

Leonard’s background also includes serving as president and owner of his own advertising and consulting firm in Memphis.

His first love is coaching, however, and it’s something he’s succeeded at on every level that he’s coached.

Leonard was the head coach and assistant athletic director at Christian Brothers University 1990-97, where his teams compiled an overall record of 127-86. He is the only coach in the school’s history with six consecutive winning seasons and his best team in 1993-94 went 24-8 and earned him Coach of the Year honors in the Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference. He is a two-time NAIA District 24 Coach of the Year.

As assistant athletic director at Christian Brothers University, he also gained valuable experience in the administrative side of the basketball program, including working in promotions, fund raising and with the NCAA.

Leonard’s CBU team in 1994-95 topped the nation in all classifications and in both men’s and women’s divisions in free throw shooting percentage.

Prior to his coaching at CBU, Leonard served as the head coach at Christian Brothers High School from 1978-90. He is the school’s all-time winningest coach, won a state championship in 1986-87 and was named the district Coach of the Year four times. During his tenure at Christian Brothers High School, 28 of his players went on to play collegiate basketball.
