Softball Sets Record With 13 Sun Belt Wins

Troy, Ala. (4/29/12) - The North Texas softball team set a program record with 13 conference wins in a 4-3 victory against Troy on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Softball Complex.

North Texas recorded its second sweep of the season with the three wins against Troy. The Mean Green moves into fourth place with the sweep. The Mean Green improves to 23-24-1 overall and 13-10 in the Sun Belt. The 13 wins surpass the 2010 team that posted 12 victories. Troy falls to 31-20 and 10-12 in the conference.

The Mean Green came back from a 3-0 deficit to secure the win. Ashley Kirk picked up her 10th win of the season. She pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters. Her only mistake was giving up a home run in the fourth inning.

Troy took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning off a three-run homer by Hayden Gann. Kirk walked two batters before giving up the long ball to Gann.

North Texas responded with two runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to one. Jordan Terry doubled and Lesley Hirsch singled to put runners on the corners for Megan Rupp who reached base on an error, allowing both runs to score.

Two runs in the sixth secured the win for the Mean Green. Ashley McCarroll knocked in the game-tying run with an RBI single, and Jackie Miller brought home the winning run with another single.

Terry and Caitlin Grimes each posted two hits in the game. North Texas outhit Troy, 8-4.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, May 2 when it faces Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m. at Lovelace Stadium.
