Troy, Ala. (4/28/12) - The North Texas softball team
swept Troy in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Troy Softball
Complex. The Mean Green won by scores of 3-0 and 4-1.
The Mean Green improves to 22-24-1 and 12-10-1 in the
conference. The 12 wins ties a program best for most conference wins in a
season. Troy falls to 31-19 and 10-11 in the conference. North Texas looks for
the series sweep on Sunday, April 29 at 11 a.m.
Ashley Kirk pitched a three-hit shutout, and Brooke
Foster posted four hits in the opening win. Brittany Simmons picked up a save
in the first game and recorded her 10th win in the nightcap.
Kirk picked up her ninth win of the season in the opening
game. She pitched six innings and allowed just three hits, while striking out
five. Simmons pitched a perfect seventh inning to preserve the win and pick up
her second save of the season.
Foster went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the
opening game. She recorded four of NT's nine hits in the game. She is the
second player this season to post four hits in a single game and the third to
hit two doubles in one game. It is the second time in her career that she has
recorded four hits in a single game.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Lesley
Hirsch led off with a double. She advanced to third on a groundout and then
scored off a Foster double.
North Texas added to the 1-0 lead in the seventh when
Hirsch ignited the offense for a second time with a single. After Megan Rupp
reached on a fielder's choice, Foster knocked in her second run with her second
double and scored on a Trojan error.
Brittany Simmons picked up her 10th win of the
season in the second game. She pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned
run in seven innings of work.
Hirsch gave North Texas a 1-0 lead in the second game
with an RBI single in the second inning. Ashley McCarroll scored after reaching
base on an error. Troy responded by tying the game in the third with an
unearned run.
North Texas regained the lead in the fifth with two runs
off a Trojan error and an RBI by Lisa Johnson. McCarroll knocked in a run in
the seventh inning with a single to give North Texas a 4-1 advantage.
Hirsch, McCarroll and Rupp combined for six of NT's eight
hits in the second game. Hirsch also had an assist in the outfield, throwing
out a Trojan runner trying to go home in the bottom of the sixth.
