Johnetta Hayes is in her second season as an assistant coach at North Texas. In her first season with the Mean Green, Hayes played a pivotal role in the development of the North Texas low-post game as she worked with the forwards and post players.
The impact was immediate as each of the North Texas forwards set career-best numbers in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots last season. Hayes successfully turned Torrian Timms into an impact player off the Mean Green bench as she set career marks in every offensive category last season.

Hayes was previously the head coach at Wiley College where she successfully turned the Wildcats into a national power in just two seasons by winning 42 games. Hayes led Wiley to a 29-7 record in 2007-08 and earned the school its first-ever national ranking. Wiley finished the season ranked No. 22 in the country.

Hayes was named the 2007-08 Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.Wiley had a 14-2 mark in conference play in 2007-08 with its only two losses coming to the conference champion Langston.  In just two seasons at Wiley, Hayes coached seven all-conference players and the Red River Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2007-08.

Under Hayes, the Wildcats overwhelmed their opponents, winning by an average margin of 24 points per game.  In her first season at Wiley, Hayes won 16 games after inheriting a program that had won just 10 the prior season.
A prolific defensive player  and four-year letterwinner at Rice, Hayes was a 2003 first-team all-WAC selection after leading her team in scoring, rebounds, blocked shots and field goal percentage. Hayes was 16th in the nation that season in blocked shots per game averaging 2.46 per contest.

She is still second all-time in blocked shots at Rice with 142 and sixth in school history with a rebounding average of 8.1 boards per game throughout her career.

The Houston, Texas native graduated from Rice University and got her coaching start in 2004 at her alma mater, Sterling High School. In one season at Sterling, she won 22 games and advanced her team to the playoffs.

Along with her undergraduate degree from Rice, Hayes also has a master’s degree in education administration from Prairie View A&M. She is currently working towards her Ph.D. at the University of Houston.
