DENTON, Texas - North Texas tennis head coach Sujay Lama was named the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, the conference announced on Monday.
Lama, who led the Mean Green to its second Sun Belt Conference Championship in the last three seasons, registered 18 wins for the first time in his career as a head coach.
"I am thankful for this recognition and I accept it on behalf of our team," said Lama. "This is great honor but it really is a reflection of the hard work put by the ladies in our team, coaching staff and the entire support staff."
North Texas (18-6) earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament by virtue of defeating FIU in the SBC Championship match, 4-2 on Sunday at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green won 18 matches in a season for the first time since 1984-85 and recorded the second best season ever with a 75-percent win percentage.
"Once again, thank you to the Mean Green Nation for all the support you gave us this past weekend," Lama added. "We're looking forward to taking the next step in the NCAA tournament."
The NCAA Selection Show for tennis will take place on Tuesday, May 1, at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.
