DENTON, Texas - North Texas Athletics Hall of Famer Bill Mercer was honored with the dedication of a press club in his name in a ceremony at Apogee Stadium Friday night. The media dining and hospitality room on the fifth floor of Apogee Stadium will now be known as the Bill Mercer Press Club. The naming venture was brought to fruition by a group of Mercer's former pupils during his time as a University of North Texas faculty member in the Radio Television and Film department. The Bill Mercer Press Club is primarily used for media dining during home football games but also serves as a hospitality suite and small press conference venue. Mercer served the University of North Texas with skill and dedication as the play-by-play voice of Eagles (Mean Green) football and basketball from 1959-94. Bill earned a UNT master's degree in 1966 while also calling Dallas Cowboys football, Texas League baseball, pro wrestling, and anchoring sports for KRLD-TV. In 1972 he became the original voice of the Texas Rangers, later moving to the Chicago White Sox. |
